Pericles (Greek Περικλῆς) was general or strategos of Athens, statesman and orator. He led the city from c. 461 BC to 429 BC, between the Persian and Peloponnesian wars.Roman copy after a Greek original from c. 430 BC This period is known as Athens’ Golden Age or Age of Pericles. He practically ruled as a king over the Athenian democracy, and built the city into a powerful Empire. He was the one who masterminded the building of the Parthenon c. 450. Pericles died in the year 429 BC around the age of sixty-five, from the great plague that wiped out a quarter of the Athenian population. After his death, Athens lost the second Peloponnesian War to Sparta: the city had come to the end of its Empire.

Ivan IV Vasilyevich (1530-1584), known in Russia as Ivan Grozny, “Ivan the Terrible”, was the first ruler to be crowned Czar of All Russia in 1547.

Ivan distrusted the boyars, the highest members of the aristocracy, who molested him as a child and certainly poisoned his mother. In the first years of his reign, Ivan reformed the government, church and army, and improved the lives of lower people. But in 1560, when his beloved wife Anastasia died, Ivan became a cruel and merciless ruler, although he was very much involved in religion. Ivan became famous for his massacres, public executions, and furious temper: one day, he accenditally killed his own son. Some people think he died poisoned.

Frederick II (1712-1786), or Frederick the Great, third and last King of Prussia, was a monarch of the Hohenzollern dynasty.

Frederick patronized philosophers as Kant or Voltaire, musicians like C. P. E. Bach and Johann Joachim Quantz, and others. He was himself interested in arts and literature, and spoke nearly 10 modern and ancient languages. Talented musician, he played the flute and wrote 100 sonatas for this instrument, as well as 4 symphonies! His statesmanship was praised all over Europe. Goethe called him “a Pole Star”.

Charlemagne (742 or 747 – 814), in latin Carolus Magnus meaning “Charles the Great”, was King of the Franks. He was the son of Pepin the Short and Betrada of Laon (also called Bertra with the big feet).
