The Maya Civilisation in Mesoamerica is a pre-Columbian civilisation that appeared c. 2600 BC, reached its apogee c. 250-900 and ended with the arrival of the Spanish (16th century). This civilisation is noted for its written language, astronomical system (they used a more precise calendar than ours), mathematical system (a base 20 numbering system and the concept of zero), and above all for its architecture (astonishing Maya stepped pyramids).
