If you’re like most people, you probably have an intellectual as well as an emotional reaction when you hear the word “documentation.”
Intellectually, you think about what constitutes documentation, and that’s probably SOPs, how tos, a knowledge base, that sort of thing. Technical instructions for doing things. Emotionally, you might appreciate the value of documentation while simultaneously not enjoying the process of creating it.
What’s really cool, however, is that when you expand your vision of what documentation can be, something amazing happens. The easier documentation is, the more powerful it becomes. The value of documentation compounds as you start to see all the different uses for it. This is the future of IT documentation.
Documentation stops being something you write and file away and starts becoming more like a Swiss Army knife that you can use to improve your team’s performance in any number of different ways.
