Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, an attempt to resurrect the Western Roman Empire ended in 476, was a conglomeration of lands in Central Europe. It was an elective monarchy, and the Emperor was crowned by the Pope until the beginning of the 16th century. The Empire began with the coronation of Otto I in 962 and ended in 1806 following a military defeat by Napoleon I. The single-headed Imperial Eagle was the symbol of the Holy Roman Empire.
