Easter is perhaps the most important feast for Christians: it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, the third day after his crucifixion. But where does the word Easter, in german Ostern, come from? In most Christian countries, the name of this festival is derived from the Hebrew Pesach (Passover), a Jewish holiday commemorating the Exodus of the Israelites from ancient Egypt. But why the english Easter and the german Ostern? Well, what is today a Christian feast was named after the goddess Eostre, the germanic goddess of spring and fertility!
Easter was the Pagan festival of spring, the hare (the Easter Bunny) and the eggs were Pagan symbols of fertility.
