Charlemagne (742 or 747 – 814), in latin Carolus Magnus meaning “Charles the Great”, was King of the Franks. He was the son of Pepin the Short and Betrada of Laon (also called Bertra with the big feet).

Charlemagne conquered Italy, and became Emperator Romanorum (Emperor of the Romans), and the renewer of the Western Roman Empire, after his coronation by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day, 25 December 800. He is sometimes regarded as the Father of Europe. Above, the monogram of Charlemagne.
