The Indian Emperor Ashoka ruled the Maurya Empire from 273 to 232 BC. He is also called the Alexander of India.
Ashoka was known to be a cruel and ruthless king. But one day, after a very bloody battle, he realised what disasters he had caused, and converted to Buddhism. Today, he is regarded as one of the most exemplary and righteous rulers in history.
The Edicts of Ashoka, which proclaim Ashoka’s policies, were inscribed on pillars and rocks: they show us how much the Indian Emperor was concerned about the well-being of his subjects.
