The Battle of Actium, fought on September 2, 31 BC, was a decisive naval engagement in the Roman Civil War between Octavian and Mark Antony. Mark Antony and his beloved Cleopatra, queen of Egypt, were defeated and eventually both committed suicide.

After his victory, Octavian became Augustus Caesar. This was the end of the Roman Republic, and the beginning of the Roman Empire.
